Website bounce rates

Why your website bounce rate is so high (and how to fix it)

A high bounce rate is your website telling you something is wrong. Here's what's usually causing it and what you can actually do about it.

What is a bounce rate, and what’s a good one?

A bounce rate is the percentage of visitors who land on your website and leave without clicking through to another page. They arrive, they look (or don’t), and they’re gone.

A certain amount of bouncing is normal and expected. Someone who finds your phone number on your homepage and calls you straight away technically counts as a bounce, even though the visit did exactly what you wanted it to. So before you panic, it’s worth understanding what you’re actually looking at.

As a rough guide, a bounce rate below 40% is strong, 40 to 60% is typical for most business websites, and anything above 70% is worth paying attention to. If yours is consistently high across multiple pages, your site is probably failing to give visitors what they came for.

The most common reasons for a high bounce rate

Your site loads too slowly

This is the single biggest culprit for most businesses. Research consistently shows that visitors will abandon a page if it takes more than a couple of seconds to load. On mobile, patience runs out even faster. A slow site doesn’t just frustrate visitors, it also signals to Google that the experience isn’t good enough, which quietly damages your search rankings too.

Large unoptimised images, outdated hosting, and poorly coded themes are the usual suspects. This is fixable, and usually more quickly than people expect.

The site doesn’t work properly on mobile

More than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices. If your site is fiddly to navigate on a phone, text is too small, buttons are too close together, or you have to pinch and zoom to read anything, visitors will leave. Quickly. A site that was built five or more years ago without a mobile-first approach is particularly vulnerable here.

The page doesn’t match what they were expecting

If someone clicks on a Google result or an ad that promises one thing, and your page delivers something different, they’ll bounce immediately. This mismatch between expectation and reality is one of the most common conversion problems we see. The fix is making sure your page titles, meta descriptions, and ad copy accurately reflect what’s actually on the page.

The design lacks clarity

Visitors make a snap judgement about a website in a fraction of a second. If the page looks cluttered, outdated, or confusing, they’ll leave before they’ve even read a word. First impressions online are brutal, and design plays a much bigger role in whether someone stays than most people realise.

There’s no clear next step

If someone arrives on your page and can’t immediately see what to do next, they’ll do nothing and leave. No clear call to action, too many options competing for attention, or important information buried halfway down the page all have the same effect. Visitors need to be guided, not left to figure it out for themselves.

The content doesn’t answer their question

People arrive on your site with a question or a problem. If your content is vague, generic, or written primarily for search engines rather than for people, visitors will go back to Google and try somewhere else. Good content that speaks directly to your audience and answers real questions is one of the most underrated tools for reducing bounce rate.

How to fix it

Start with page speed. Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights (it’s free) and it’ll tell you exactly what’s slowing things down. Common fixes include compressing images, enabling caching, and switching to faster hosting.

Check how your site looks and behaves on a phone. Not a simulated mobile view on your desktop, but an actual phone. Click through the pages, fill in a form, try to find your contact details. If it’s frustrating for you, it’s frustrating for everyone.

Look at which pages have the highest bounce rates in Google Analytics and ask honestly whether the content on those pages is doing its job. Is it clear? Is it relevant to what someone searching for that page would want to know? Does it tell them what to do next?

And if your site is more than four or five years old and hasn’t been substantially updated, it may be worth considering a redesign rather than patching individual problems. Sometimes the most efficient fix is a fresh start.

One more thing worth knowing

Bounce rate should never be looked at in isolation. A blog post that people read from top to bottom and then leave is technically a bounce, but that’s not a failure. Context matters. What you’re really looking for is whether visitors are engaging, getting what they need, and taking the action you want them to take.

If they’re not, your bounce rate is telling you why. And that’s genuinely useful information.
