Location
NFRSA is a national UK registered charity dedicated to promoting the care, well-being, and welfare of retired service animals. Supporting dogs and horses from emergency service branches including police, fire & rescue, border force, NHS, MOD police, RAF police, the prison service, and the National Crime Agency. NFRSA provides financial grants to help cover the veterinary and medical costs of these cherished animals once their working days end.
NFRSA approached Lounge Design at a pivotal point: before their official launch, seeking both a powerful brand vision and the foundational tools required to connect with stakeholders. Lounge created the initial brand logo, pivotal for early communications and fund-raising efforts led by the founder, The Countess Bathurst, and later designed a dynamic website as the charity prepared to launch.
PROJECT PREPARATION
PROJECT GOALS
From day one, The Countess Bathurst’s ambition was clear, the NFRSA would serve as a national charity. The brand design needed to reflect this stature: authoritative, inclusive, and immediately recognisable to represent a cause of national importance.
CHALLENGES
The primary challenge lay in developing a neutral but commanding visual identity. Each emergency service sector traditionally uses distinct colours: police blue, fire service red – making it essential to select a brand colour and visual approach that resonated equally across all groups, remained non-partisan, and was unmistakably NFRSA.
Research and Discovery
Lounge began with an in-depth exploration of animal charities and the evolving vision of NFRSA’s founder. Recognising early that the charity name would often be referenced by its acronym, we prioritised a design strategy that could swiftly convey mission and values, regardless of the user’s familiarity. Brand flexibility was a key priority, ensuring longevity and adaptability as the charity’s ambitions grew.
A major insight was ensuring resonance across a broad demographic. The team designed a graphic symbol, an instantly recognisable device providing clarity on NFRSA’s sector at a glance.
TARGET AUDIENCE
As a charity serving such a wide remit, the NFRSA brand needed to appeal to all, regardless of background or connection to service animals while remaining memorable and trustworthy.
COMPETITOR RESEARCH
In reviewing peer organisations, it became clear that first impressions counted. The NFRSA brand was engineered from day one to feel established and credible, setting a platform for growth, fundraising, and awareness campaigns.
OUR SOLUTION
BRAND DEVELOPMENT
WEBSITE DESIGN & EVOLUTION
NFRSA’s website, initially envisaged as a modest “brochureware” site, rapidly expanded to encompass a comprehensive information resource and an ecommerce platform. This evolution allowed the charity to share stories, grow donor engagement, and manage direct fundraising activities with greater sophistication.
Key focuses included:
- Expanding site architecture for new content and functions
- User-friendly ecommerce and donation processes
- Clear, emotive content to drive engagement and build community

The brand’s clarity and credibility have underpinned increased awareness, partnership opportunities, and ongoing donor support.

NFRSA’s brand continues to evolve in step with their growth and outreach. The visual identity remains a proud, adaptive foundation for all communications instantly recognisable and trusted by supporters across the UK.
