We see a lot of websites. And honestly, it’s pretty easy to spot when one isn’t doing the job it should be. The tricky part is that most business owners either don’t realise, or they know something’s off but aren’t quite sure what. So here are five signs your website is probably overdue a redesign, plus one really important check you should do right now.
1. It looks dated
Design moves fast. A site that looked great five years ago can feel noticeably tired today, and visitors pick up on that straight away, even if they can’t put their finger on why. Clunky layouts, fonts that feel a bit 2015, tacky posed business images (think accountant websites with pictures of calculators and spreadsheets), or a design that was clearly never meant to be viewed on a phone. It all adds up.
Your website doesn’t need to follow every trend going. But it should feel current and confident, and reflect how you actually present your business in the real world.
2. It doesn’t work properly on mobile
If your site was built a good few years back, there’s a fair chance the mobile experience isn’t great. Text that’s too small to read without squinting, buttons you can’t quite tap without hitting the wrong thing, images that don’t scale properly. You know the sort of thing.
More than half of all web traffic now comes from mobile devices, so if your site is difficult to use on a phone, a lot of your visitors are having a pretty frustrating experience. Google takes mobile performance seriously too, so a poor mobile site can quietly drag your search rankings down as well.
3. It’s slow to load
Nobody waits for a slow website. A few seconds is all it takes for someone to get frustrated and go back to Google to try somewhere else. And on mobile, that patience runs out even faster.
Old hosting, unoptimised images, a bloated theme that hasn’t been touched in years. These are usually the culprits. It’s often more fixable than people expect, but left unchecked it’s costing you visitors and quietly hurting your SEO.
4. It’s not generating enquiries
This is a big one. If your site is getting traffic but the enquiries just aren’t coming in, something isn’t working. Maybe the messaging isn’t clear, maybe there’s no obvious next step for visitors, maybe the content isn’t speaking to the right people. Usually it’s a bit of everything.
A website that looks fine but doesn’t convert visitors into actual enquiries isn’t really doing its job. It’s just sitting there looking pretty.
5. You’re embarrassed to share it
Honestly, this is the most telling sign of all. If you find yourself hesitating before sending someone your web address, or you catch yourself saying “it’s a bit out of date” as a disclaimer, your gut is telling you something. Your website should be something you’re genuinely proud to point people to, not something you feel the need to apologise for.
One more thing: when did you last actually test your contact form?
This one comes up a lot and it’s so easy to miss.
Contact forms stop working. It happens more than you’d think, and it can go months without anyone noticing. Sometimes it’s a plugin update that’s broken something, sometimes a server change, and sometimes an email provider starts blocking messages sent from your site and every enquiry is landing in a spam folder or disappearing completely.
Think about what that actually means. Someone visits your site, they like what they see, they fill in your contact form. And then they hear nothing back. They don’t know the form is broken. From their point of view, you just didn’t reply.
And you had no idea they ever got in touch.
When did you last fill in the contact form on your own website to check it actually works? If you can’t remember, go and do it now. It takes two minutes and could genuinely be the most useful thing you do today. If it’s broken, or if the emails are going to spam, get it sorted as a priority, whether a full redesign is on the cards or not.
So, does your site need a full redesign?
Not always. Sometimes the issues are fixable without starting from scratch, and a targeted set of improvements can make a big difference. But if several of the above sound familiar, it’s probably worth having a proper look at what’s going on.
